Italy - 10-12 Sep 2010Gran Premio Santander d'Italia Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Monza, Italy Race Distance: 53 laps, 306.720 km As one of the three circuits on the schedule that were also on the schedule back in 1950's first F1 championship, Monza is one of the quintessential F1 tracks. Built in 1922 it featured an incredible oval and a high-speed road course. Today the oval is unused, and the road course has been drastically slowed with chicanes for safety, but remains the fastest track on the Formula 1 schedule. Long straights result in special low-drag bodywork for the race, giving the cars the top speed needed for low lap times, but also means low grip in the corners that test the drivers' skill. Brawn was back on top at Monza in 2009. Barrichello led the 1-2 win over Button as they ran 1-stop fuel strategies. Raikkonen took 3rd when Hamilton crashed out alone at the end of the race. Monza is in Italy, and Italy means Ferrari. For the first time this season, the front row does not include a Red Bull as Ferrari's Alonso takes the top lap. Starting along side him will be Button who makes creative use of the f-duct to allow large wings and yet good lap times on the very fast Monza circuit. Massa will start 3rd, following his teammate. The Red Bull cars start 4th and 6th with Webber over Vettel. Hamilton is 5th fastest. The top qualifiers in Italy: ALO BUT MAS WEB HAM VET ROS HUL KUB BAR The first race at Monza to see the use of the f-duct blown rear wing technology shows the world there are two legitimate ways to go fast at F1's fastest track. Jumping into the lead at turn 1 was Button, who then used his f-duct equipped McLaren to hold off the non-ducted Ferraris of Alonso and Massa. By keeping up his speeds in the Lesmos corners with the extra downforce of the larger wings, Button was able to maintain his lead over Alonso who had a huge straight line advantage. But it was Button that blinked first and hit the pit lane one lap before Alonso for his single stop. Giving just one lap with a clean track, Alonso was able to make up enough time to allow his pit crew to throw down an incredible 3 second pitstop that put Ferrari in the lead to the delight of the Italian crowd. From then on, there was no chance for Button to pass a car so much quicker down the straights than him. So the race ended with the podium matching the qualifying order, but not without some excellent racing from the top 3. Other notable drives came from Hamilton who broke his front suspension on Massa's rear wheels on lap 1, throwing his championship points lead away. Vettel races up to 4th despite a moment with "an engine problem" that let Webber by earlier in the race. Rosberg puts in a terrific run in the Mercedes to round out the top 5.
