Monaco - 13-16 May 2010
Grand Prix de Monaco
Circuit de Monaco Monte Carlo, Monaco
Race Distance: 78 laps, 260.520 km

The Monaco Grand Prix has been around since 1929 and has evolved into not just the most spectacular race of the F1 calendar, but perhaps the most amazing race in all of motorsports.

The course has remained nearly unchanged since the inception of the event resulting in a narrow, bumpy course where the cars race wheel to wheel mere inches away from the Armco walls. The course is so tight, the teams are forces to use one-off suspension designs to get around the tightest hairpin of the season.

Last season, the race went line to line without rain or safety cars, leaving the race not much more than a parade. Button won from pole, with Barrichello taking 2nd from Raikkonen before the first turn.
Traffic was the big concern this season with the addition of new teams on the tight circuit. Surprisingly however, traffic was not a huge factor until Q3 where several drivers perhaps missed optimal use of their tires.

Renault powered cars end up taking the top 3 position, led by Webber who was the only driver in the 1:13's. Kubica takes his season best starting position in 2nd. Vettel will start 3rd directly behind his teammate.

Alonso will start at the back of the grid after a practice 3 crash forced him to skip qualifying as Ferrari rushed to build up another chassis in time for the race.

Even without weather to shake up the race, this year's race turned out to be more exciting than the usual parade.

Alonso's last place start led to a fantastic charge through the field, assisted by the first of 4 safety car periods that allowed him to pit early for his required tire change. Alonso runs all the way up to 6th place.

Vettel nabs 2nd position from Kubica at the race start, but can't keep up with teammate Webber. The two Red Bull drivers finish 1-2 for the second time this season, and puts the two drivers in a points tie for the championship.

Kubica's surprising pace in the Renault allows him to keep 3rd and finish on the podium. Massa has a better than usual finish as well in 4th. Hamilton rounds out the top 5.

But the big controversy of the race came with the finish under the Safety Car. The Safety Car came in on the last lap, green flags flew, and Schumacher used the opportunity to pass Alonso for 6th between pit-in and the start/finish line. After the race, Schumacher was docked 20 seconds for passing under the Safety Car, dropping him to 12th position and out of the points.
