Well, with the simplified rules and some early luck I won, I suspect next season I will have my ass handed to me under the traditional rules and I look forward to it. Sperry I will pm you later about the trophy, my favorite track, awesome!

Somehow, the FIA was able to piece together a 17 round season despite the global pandemic. And at the end of it all, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes came out on top yet again. It was entertaining in its novelty, seemingly starting with online racing before getting back to real racing at some old and/or unusual tracks... some of them multiple times.
The Fantasy season was also unusual with the modified podium-only rules. e^n takes the overall win by picking 15 of 17 race winners. With no money on the line, his first fantasy championship is likely bittersweet. But in addition to bragging rights, e^n will receive this rusty, old laser-cut steel track map of Spa-Francorchamp:
Seems like something rusty and a little beat-up is a fitting prize for Formula 1 in 2020.
Congrats to e^n!
The podium runners up, sperry and vwown3d win nothing, and should feel bad for not doing better.
Here's to a better, safer, healthier 2021. The pandemic is not likely to be over completely by the time we hit the track in Australia next year, but hopefully we'll be looking at a full race season with some normal FF1 competition! Thanks to everyone for hanging in there this year, both here and in general. Hope everyone has a happy and healthy holiday season and new year. See you next time!

Looks like HAM will be back. A tad bummed as I would have liked RUS to get another shot with the Merc. The driver selections have been adjusted.

Just corrected the Local Qualifying Start Time for the Sakhir race. Picks are due 1700Hrs UTC Saturday, so sooner than the notification emails suggest. The correction prompted the second email.

Horrendous crash for Grosjean. Miraculous he escaped with just minor burns. By my count from the time of impact to the time he was fully clear of the burning wreckage 25 to 30 seconds passed.
BTW, sperry, the Pick Counts on the Standing page look off.

Dude, @delongedoug with the GAS pick! What brand crystal ball do you use?
by
sperry
at 12:27 pm, Sep 8
Yeah, I saw that earlier... but it's a huge pain to modify the code to handle it. lol
I guess if we manually resubmit the results for the events where the fast lap is outside of the top 3 without the +1 bonus, that would be the "easy" way to fix it.
by
Jody Scheckter
at 11:39 pm, Sep 6
Not that it matters, but I think that if we don't score any points for a non-top 3 finish, we probably shouldn't be picking up a fast lap point either.

You try to shake up your picks just because always picking the same three drivers is getting dull, and of course, the same three drivers are on the podium for the 5th time in 7 races.

So there were some issues with the scheduler last week that prevented the round from going live properly. I disabled the email system while I fixed it... then forgot to turn the emails back on. Sorry for any people that missed the expected 24 or 3 hour warning emails. This whole season is sort of a mess.
Things are turned back on. Please let me know if you see any issues!

Woah... PER is COVID-19 positive.
Out for the next two races, at least.
Looks like Stoffel Vandoorne is the backup, but there are Hulkenberg rumors. Apparently we'll know who's in the car on Friday.
I made both RP backup drivers (VAN, GUT), plus HUL available to pick.

Hurray for red herrings.
There was an incorrect database permission that was preventing the TRUNCing of the standings table, so every time the standings were updated it couldn't removed the old row and was just adding new ones. It had nothing to do with the changes I made for the hidden events.
Looks like it's fixed now though. Please let me know if you see more weird stuff!

sperry

Looks like there's a bug in the standings calculations that is doubling up round results every time the results are recalculated. I just manually re-ran the results and now there are three round 1's and two round 2's.
It's got to be related to a query that's missing the new code that ignores hidden rounds that I added to handle all the events that aren't officially on the schedule. So I should be able to fix it shortly.
Also, the issue appears to be cosmetic and isn't affecting actual championship.

Anyone else seeing Round 1/Austria listed twice when making picks?
edited by
sperry

Yeah, I would never have tried this for a season with money on the line. Unfortunately Ferrari is just so uncompetitive there probably won’t be many 3 team podiums. This would have been way more interesting if you had to pick the podium ORDER, but that’s an extensive re-write of the picking and scoring code.
by
delongedoug
at 10:36 am, Jul 13
Yeah, it's going to be too easy to HAM/BOT/VER the whole season with no skill or strategy but for a freebie funsies season, it's whatever.

This is an interesting experiment that is quickly revealing how predictable things can become when you have too few picks per round and no restrictions. If you fall behind, it is going to be very difficult to climb back in it.
by

@delongdoug, I had the same picks. I scrapped LEC at the last minute for PER after watching practice, thinking that if Force India, er, Racing Point was ever going to podium, it'd be early on in the season. I thought it was going to actually work out.
Then ALB passed PER and I was
, then HAM spun ALB and I was all
, but then LEC passed PER and I was like
, then HAM got a penalty and NOR snuck onto the podium and I was all
.

by

Okay, I rebooted the season... the 8 confirmed rounds are on the schedule. I did have to modify the code a little to allow for hidden rounds, so I can bring the other rounds into the schedule easily if they are confirmed... but if you see any weirdness with the site or the scoring, let me know!
I also deleted the picks table in the database to clean up pick counts for rounds that got hidden. If you already made picks, you will need to make them again.

What about something silly, like a "podium challenge"? 3 drivers per round, but you only score if your picks are on the podium. No limits on driver pick counts.
I feel like that's only something I'd be willing to suggest when there's no money on the line.
Edit: after rereading vwown3d's post, that's sorta what he was suggesting too.

Well, 2020 is a strange year indeed.
Due to so many rounds being cancelled over Coronavirus concerns, and due to the inability to craft fantasy rules that would provide for a fair skill-based challenge in the face of the unknown season format, all entries fees for the season have been refunded. The season will be conducted simply for fun (and for bragging rights?) this year, with no monetary prizes.
Due to the shortened season and inability to plan picks for an unknown number of rounds, we will be attempting a simplified "podium challenge" ruleset for 2020. This means:
* Just 3 picks per round
* ONLY podium finishes (top 3) score points
* Drivers may be picked an unlimited number of times (no need to save them for later rounds!)
* One dropped lowest scoring round
by
vwown3d
at 8:17 am, Jun 26
Maybe limit the number of picks per round to the top 3....or 4. Bring down the picks per driver to a lower level (depending on schedule).
I agree on refunding and having a gag gift...or give the option to roll it into entry for next year. If the schedule is going to be all over the place it's a bit tricky on scheduling and locking in picks. Just throwing out ideas (they could all suck)....my other idea was have unlimited picks per driver and have it a high point free-for-all!

What if we had a rule like you can't start a driver in consecutive races? That way, it does matter as much how many races there are in the season.
by
Jody Scheckter
at 12:50 am, Jun 19
It appears that the intent is to have a 15 race season. Question is, will the full schedule be set before the first race is run, and if not, will that uncertainty make setting FF1 rules too tricky?
by
Jody Scheckter
at 1:48 pm, Jun 13
I'd have to agree that the amount of unreliability about the schedule makes it hard to have a season. Then again, we'd all be dealing with the same unknowns as players. But the main problem might be that with so few races we're all likely to go with the same strategy of picking the top team drivers.
by
sperry
at 9:22 pm, Jun 12
My current thinking is that the rules we have are going to be unlikely to work well with such a significantly shortened season, plus there’s a high likelihood that people will be unable to reliably make/plan picks if the event schedule is up in the air.
I think the right answer is probably to refund entry fees for everyone and run the season for fun, and I’ll try to come up with a silly gag gift for the champion.
Any opinions from folks?

Welcome to the 2020 Fantasy Formula 1 Season!
Incredibly, this is our 15th season hosting Fantasy F1. Big thank you to those of you who have been playing over the last decade and a half.
2020 appears to be much like 2019 with few changes to the driver's lineup and technical regulations. As such, we'll be running the same rules as last season, with 5 picks per round, 8 picks per driver for the season, and 2 drops. See the FAQ/Rules for details!
Good luck!
