This track includes many different elements that require a car to be well-rounded and balanced at all speeds. Traditionally, passing is rare at the circuit due to the high speed sweepers that prevent a following car from being able to keep up because of dirty air. Despite an early lead in last seasons race, hometown hero Alonso couldn't save his tires long enough to hold off Maldonado who took his first ever F1 win. Alonso settled for 2nd, and Raikkonen placed 3rd. The pace of the Silver Arrows is unmatched as Rosberg and Hamilton lock out the front row for Mercedes. The concern for the team is tire wear, as they've been able to qualify well, only to lose pace in the race as their tires give out earlier than their competition. Vettel puts his Red Bull into 3rd spot, alongside Raikkonen. Alonso and Massa lock out row 3, but Massa will have a penalty for blocking Webber. The top 10 in Spain: ROS HAM VET RAI ALO MAS* GRO WEB PER DIR *3-spot penalty for blocking As expected, the Mercedes lock out of the front row was not enough, even at the impossible to pass Catalunya circuit, to get Rosberg or Hamilton to the podium. Rosberg only manages 6th, while Hamilton drops all the way to 12th by race end. Coming to the front in dramatic fashion is Alonso. Winning his home race for the first time in a Ferrari. Raikkonen remains consistent with another finish in 2nd, while Massa finally breaks onto the podium in 3rd. Vettel and Webber round out the top 5.
