Congrats guys! Great season... lots of people did very well just by being consistent rather than scoring outright round wins.

Congrats to our Fantasy F1 Champion: delongedoug!
This is delongedoug's first championship in his second season. delongedoug's season started out with some poor rounds, but he quickly set a standard of consistent big point rounds, if not outright wins. By Italy (Round 12), he took the overall lead for the first time and never lost it. Congratulations to delongedoug, who earns $160 for his top finish!
Placing second, for the second season in a row, is Van. Van comes from a last place finish in 2011 to winning money two seasons running. Van spent the entire season, save round 1, trading positions in the top 5. With just 4 round wins, he was able to lead the championship for the middle rounds, but simply couldn't match the points pulled down by delongedoug for the latter third of the season. Congratulations to Van who earns $96 for second place!
Rounding out the fantasy championship podium is soldmyboxster in his first season in the league. soldmyboxster takes third with pure tenacity. With just 2 round wins, and having spent most the season out of the money, he grabs third in the penultimate round, and wins the final round to protect his position. Congratulations to soldmyboxster who earns $64 for third place!
Thanks to all our participants for an exciting season. With the new 2014 F1 regulations, expect to see a shake-up of the championship next year. Similarly, there may be some changes coming to the fantasy F1 rules as well, as we are looking into adding some bonus picks to make things more challenging and interesting. Stay tuned to the forums, and we hope to see everyone back for next season!

By winning in the US, Vettel looks to have a real shot at tying Schumacher's single season wins record, as well as the consecutive wins record with one more win in Brazil.
Lisa takes the US round in our fantasy championship, but 55 points aren't enough to move up and positions. soldmyboxster also pulls down 55 points, and jumps up one position into the money in 3rd overall, just 3 points ahead of Reno Stack. Rock_Strongo takes 3rd in the round with 54 points. MattR, sperry, and motoring all move up in the overall standings with 4th, 5th, and 6th place finishes this round.
With just one round remaining in the championship, the top 3 spots are still up for grabs. delongedoug holds the lead, just 22 points ahead of Van in 2nd, who has just a 28 point lead over soldmyboxster. Reno Stack is right there in 4th with a good chance to sneak into the money. And motoring and MattR have outside chances of coming from behind to grab a podium position.
Time to lay all your cards on the table, the next round is the season finale in Brazil!

Vettel wins a 7th race in a row. And with 11 wins and 2 rounds to go, he could tie Schumacher's single season record.
sperry wins this round by scoring 69 points, but fails to move up in the overall standings. MattR on the other hand scores 55 points for 2nd, and jumps up 3 spots into 7th and an outside chance at a money-scoring finish. Van and motoring both move up a spot as well, with their 3rd and 4th place round finishes. Van is now in 2nd place overall as Reno Stack drops a spot.
delongedoug has a 24 point lead, but is running out of big-name drivers to pick for the remaining two rounds. Van and Reno Stack have a slight edge in available drivers, but not much time to make up ground. Meanwhile, soldmyboxter sits outside the money in 4th, but isn't mathematically eliminated from even the top spot.
We go to the United States and then to Brazil, as the season finishes out in the Americas. Good luck, it all comes down to these last few rounds!

With his 6th win in a row, and 3 of 3 Indian GPs, Vettel locks up the world championship.
Doing his best to make a run at the fantasy championship, Van scoops up 70 points with the round win and jumps up 2 spots overall into 2nd place, narrowing the gap to leader delongedoug. motoring is 2nd best this round, also moving up 2 positions to 6th overall. RapidfireAZ and Reno Stack tie for the round in 3rd, RapidfireAZ gaining an overall position, while Reno Stack loses one as he drops to 3rd.
We head straight to Abu Dhabi next without a break, then it's on to the Americas to round out the season. Vettel and Red Bull are champions, but our season is still undecided!

Vettel wins his 4th Japanese GP out of the last 5 with a tire strategy battle, taking the win from legitimate contenders Webber and Grosjean.
With 72 points each, delongedoug and Reno Stack tie for the win in Japan on identical picks. Reno Stack uses his win to move up two spots into 2nd place overall.
motoring also moves up 2 spots with 58 points and 3rd place this round. Lisa takes 4th with 57 points, while curley and sperry round out the top 5 tying for 5th and both moving up one overall spot.
The season is getting down to the final 4 races now as the schedule swings through India and Abu Dhabi on its way to the United States and finally to Brazil. Vettel is poised to take the championship with a 5th or better finish in the next round. delongedoug has his own lead in the fantasy championship, but it's far from locked up. And the battle for the podium rages all the way down to the midfield contenders.
Time to play your final cards!

Vettel wins again, prompting the rustling of cheating rumors as fans start searching for a reason things always seem to go his way.
Also having things go his way, Van puts together a 70 point round for the win, moving him up a spot into 2nd overall, just 10 points out of the lead.
delongedoug takes 2nd with 64 points, protecting his overall lead as best as possible. sperry rounds out the podium with 52 points ahead of motoring and Rock_Strongo.
owace, Nick and curley all score enough points to move up a spot this round as MattR's tough round drops him 3 spots to 9th.
We head to the incredible Suzuka Circuit without a break as this weekend we race in Japan!

With a lesson to all the other teams and drivers about just how far behind they are, Vettel crushes the competition in Singapore, putting the championship nearly out of reach.
With 65 point apiece, Globerunner and motoring tie for the win this round. With 55 points each, sperry, soldmyboxster, and Tahoe RX7 take 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively based on pick quality, with soldmyboxster moving up one position into 2nd overall on his points.
Dropping 5 spots from 2nd to 6th is owace who has a tough round, but without picking VET or ALO, or RAI, he may be playing a strategy card.
Korea is up next. Will Vettel continue his dominance though the Asian swing of the season? Or will Mercedes finally figure out a way to turn good qualifying results into podium finishes? Make your picks!

Vettel wins again, stretching his championship lead. Webber puts the other Red Bull on the podium in 3rd, bookending the Ferrari of Alonso in Ferrari's home race.
curley takes this round with 65 points, moving up a spot into 8th overall. delongedoug takes 2nd in Monza, which gives him the boost needed to take the overall lead, now 4 points ahead of soldmyboxster who moves into 2nd overall with a 4th place finish. sperry take 3rd place to move up two spots into 12th.
Van drops from the lead to 3rd with a low 7 point round, but is still just 10 points from the lead, in a points tie with Reno Stack.
The European swing of the season is now complete. It's time to head back to Asia for the Singapore night race, followed by Korea and Japan.

As the drivers' championship steadily falls into Vettel's hands, our fantasy championship steadily gets harder to predict!
Nick wins in Spa, netting 63 points. RapidFireAZ and Rock_Strongo are right behind with 62 and 61 points respectively, moving them both up a position overall. MattR and motoring round out the top 5 in a relatively high scoring round for all.
At the top of the standings, Van holds onto the overall lead despite a hard round. Reno Stack in 2nd closes the gap to just 3 points. The battle for 3rd overall is even closer, as soldmyboxster leads delongedoug by just 1 point.
We're off to Italy in just 2 weeks, the home of Ferrari and their insane fans. Can Alonso win in his team's home race? Can Massa keep his job with a good finish? Make your predictions!

Hamilton, in contrary to popular pre-season opinion, is able to win from behind the wheel of a Mercedes, taking his 4th Hungaroring victory from pole.
Lisa is on top this round, scoring 68 points. Van takes 2nd with 65 points, and displaces RapidfireAZ (who takes a drop this round) for the overall lead. curley and Reno Stack tie for 3rd at 63 points, with Reno Stack moving up to 2nd overall, just 5 points out of the lead. sperry rounds out the top 5.
With the conclusion of the Hungarian GP, the season is at its mid-point, and it's time for a month-long summer break. We return to the track at the incredible Spa-Francorchamps at the end of August.

Vettel wins his home race for the 1st time, helping cement his championship lead over Alonso. But Lotus has another great round, taking 2nd and 3rd.
Nick grabs top honors in Germany with 73 points, good enough to move up two spots into 7th overall. Globerunner also moves up, one spot into 10th, by scoring 66 points for 2nd place this round. owace rounds out the fantasy podium with 61 points, maintaining 4th overall. motoring and Van round out the top 5 by tying for 4th place with 60 points each.
We move from Germany to Hungary for the next round, but the teams get a 3 week breather between races. Enough time perhaps to come to grips with the new Pirelli tire?

Yeah, the German GP is listed as live on CNBC... in standard def (no HD). My DVR is set to auto record anything named "Formula One" and, even though that's the title, it did not show up in the list of future recordings.
The replay on later is in HD on NBCSN. That's what my DVR is going to record. Also, the DVR picked up qualifying, but not practice, even though they have the same name. I'm at a loss as to what's more broken, NBC or my garbage DVR from Charter.

Sorry for the long delay posting the results. I didn't get to watch the race until last night. Thanks to Loren's heads-up, I was able to fast-forward past the spoiler news report they showed literally minutes before the race.
WTF NBC? Tape-delaying the race is bad enough, but to show the results the instant the race is scheduled to broadcast, then the race 20 minutes later? Someone over there should be fired.
That shit never happened on Varsha's watch!
by

Another race dominated by the tires... but this time, it wasn't just about making them last, it was about keeping them from exploding and throwing you of the track.
Making the most out of the tire-failure-fest is RapidFireAZ whose 59 points is enough to grab 2 positions and move into 6th overall. Globerunner513, Reno Stack, and soldmyboxster all tie for 2nd place this round with identical picks worth 57 points. delongedoug rounds out the top 5 with 55 points.
Without a break, we head straight from the UK to Germany, back again at the fantastic Nurburgring. Make your picks quick!

by

at 2:42 pm, Jun 12
Well, the detailed standings page does highlight the dropped round. It's just that the drop moves around as people have a bad round and it shakes up the standings unexpectedly.
I think next year we might just want to go back to no drops. Or just apply the drop with only 2 or 3 rounds left in the championship.
On the other hand, I've been thinking about shaking up the rules in general... perhaps adding a bonus pick, or switching to picking 2 drivers and 2 teams each race w/ no limits on the number of picks per season. But that's a whole other conversation. lol
by
MattR
at 2:43 pm, Jun 11
Is there a way you can add a column for total points and points with drop? It is weird, but I guess it's accurate as the drop will always remove the lowest total all the way to the end
by
sperry
at 10:26 am, Jun 11
Man, I hoped that including the drop in the standings earlier in the season would remove the weirdness in the standings that occurred at the halfway point when it used to be applied.
Turns out, it just means more weirdness all through the early part of the season. I think next year the drop application will need to be adjusted.
I hope the standings aren't confusing anyone as they are, because the dramatic swings of positions are slightly artificial.
by
sperry

Vettel dominates in Canada, winning from pole.
Also dominating in Canada is Van with a perfect 80 point round. This vaults Van up 5 spots overall into 2nd place. soldmyboxter takes 2nd place this round, but his 71 points are enough to take the overall lead.
delongdoug, owace, MattR, Nick, motoring, and RapidFireAZ all have 50+ point rounds to round out the top 7 this week. Everyone moves up in the overall standings, aside from RapidFireAZ, who in a weird twist of math, drops from the overall lead to 6th place, as his 50 points this round is actually his *drop* having had no other rounds scoring less than 50! So while the overall standings may have shifted, expect RapidFireAZ to head back to the top as the "pit stops cycle through" so to say.
The teams return to England for what is a home race to most of the outfits. The British GP from Silverstone is up at the end of the month!

It's a side effect of the dropped round. I've tried the calculations a few different ways, and there are drawbacks to how the history reads in each way.
Currently, the standings are always correct for "right now", but the history is also recalculated based on "right now" as well, which means each person's drop may have moved from a prior location, thus the inconsistency with earlier standings.
I keep meaning to take a look at it, but it's literally the most complicated code on the site, and I just haven't had time.

Rosberg, who grew up in Monte Carlo as son of Keke Rosberg, wins the Monaco GP 30 years to the day after his father.
delongedoug wins this round with 61 points, boosting him into 5th overall. Also placing well are Rock_Strongo and MattR who pull down 58 and 57 points respectively in a difficult to predict race. MattR moves up to 7th with his points.
curley and Reno Stack round out the top 5, with 54 and 51 points each. Reno Stack jumps up 3 spots into 2nd overall, the biggest jump this round.

Alonso wins the Spanish GP, to the thrill of his hometown fans, coming from further back to win than anyone has in more than 20 years.
With a perfect round, owace piles 80 points to his total, vaulting him up 2 spots into 3rd overall. This is owace's 2nd round win in a row allowing him to move up 10 positions since the Chinese GP.
Rock_Strongo and Globerunner513 also have terrific rounds, both scoring 70 points, moving them up in the standings as well. delongedoug and soldmyboxster tie for 4th with 68 points on identical picks to round out the top 5.
curley, Van, and sperry are hit the hardest this round, each dropping 3 positions overall, with Van dropping from the overall lead. Reno Stack inherits the top spot in the standings.

In a repeat podium from last year's Bahrain GP, Vettel takes the win surrounded by the Lotuses of Raikkonen and Grosjean.
Swinging the big hammer this round is owace. 74 points for the win and leaping up 7 positions overall to 5th. soldmyboxster takes 2nd with 62 points, enough for a big leap up 4 positions to 2nd in the standings. Globerunner513 and delongedoug both have great rounds, each scoring enough to move up the standings 5 positions to 9th and 6th respectively. RapidfireAZ rounds out the top 5 with 55 points, slipping just one spot overall to 4th.
Reno Stack has a relatively poor round, but is able to remain in the overall lead on his previous scores, as this round becomes his drop (so far).
The teams get a nice 3 week break. Enough time to outfit the cars with new parts before heading off to Spain for the start of the European swing of the championship.

With this season's Pirelli's seemingly impossible to sort out, we have a 3rd new winner in 3 races as Alonso gets the victory for Ferrari.
New this season, starting with this round, we will be applying the season's single drop to the standings. So, it may appear that the standings have been shaken up a bit. From hear on out, the standings will reflect the dropping of each participant's lowest scoring round.
So, with that in mind...
With identical picks, Reno Stack and soldmyboxster tie for the round win, hauling in 66 points apiece. That moves Reno Stack back into the overall lead, and soldmyboxster into 2nd, just 11 points behind.
Van takes 3rd in China with 63 points, but slips to 3rd overall. RapidfireAZ and Tahoe RX7 round out the top 5, with both of them moving up in the points.
The F1 Circus heads straight off to Bahrain this weekend without a break. Please get your picks in soon!

Damn you NBC. I just woke and decided to check MSNBC.com for the news like I normally do only to have the results spoiled for me. Shit

YEP! though as we've learnt in this era of F1 unpredictability that doesn't mean squat. I'm sorely disappointed by the Force India's showing.

I really wish they were racing this weekend to keep the drama on the forefront. I do find it interesting that Red Bull says they are "not happy" with Vettel but yet won't do anything about it. Vettel had plenty of time to think about what he was doing during the race and could have given the spot back. He's lost a lot of respect from me, in the end though, if he wins the Championship by a few points they won't put an asterisk next to it.
In other news: Damn you Alonso for not coming in!

Well... I'm not that surprised that Webber didn't kill Vettel by running him into the pit wall. But I'm a little surprised he didn't kill him during the weigh-in post race. lol

You could cut the tension with a knife in the post-race aftermath of the Malaysian GP. It will be an interesting 2013 as the tension revs up at Red Bull between Vettel and Webber. It will be even more interesting if the in-fighting opens a door for Ferrari or the surprisingly fast Mercedes teams to beat them on track.
Making the most out of the shenanigans in Malaysia is Van who puts together 65 points for a round win, and bumps himself into 2nd place overall. Nick is close behind with 64 points, good enough to move up 5 spots to 6th place. Holding the overall lead is Reno Stack in 3rd this round, his 59 points enough to remain 6 points out ahead of the pack.
4th place this round belongs to RapidfireAZ with 56 points. Also with 56 points, and tying for 5th, are Rock_Strongo and soldmyboxter. sperry is the big drop of the round, losing 7 positions overall with only 31 points this round.
There's a 3 week hiatus now as teams scramble to revise their cars in the wake of the experience gained on the new Pirelli tires in use this season. The teams may also want to take some time to revise their team strategy before heading to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix, the next race on the schedule.

@Reno Stack: People generally get around to forgetting picks, or intentionally skipping a round during the season. That's why we've got 1 drop.
There's a potential advantage to skipping a round because you'll drop the 0 but keep all your picks, while if you just drop a bad round you'll lose those bad picks.
Either way, the site is designed to allow you to pick the whole season ahead of time if you want just to avoid accidentally starting a round without picks.

@MattR: Here's what Bob tweeted:
"Thanks for the love re: F1. I'm glad to help out next week, but @leighdiffey is a 'mate' and doing a great job. Don't read anything into it."
Sounds like it's just a friendly offer to Bob to let him sit in while Diffey is away? NBC really should have just paid out whatever contract Bob had at Fox/Speed and brought him over with the rest of the guys.

Hey guys, looking forward to an exciting F1 & FF1 season, it's great to be aboard, thank you!
Not a bad first race all in all. I too could go without Diffey's over-hyped style. That stuff may be needed for a Grand AM ST tuner class lead change, but not in F1. Give me Varsha any day. I also heard Diffey say that Bob V was filling in for him for next weeks race, so that's nice.
Question from the newb: Are there many instances where people forget to submit their picks in time? I sure hope I don't have that "OH NO" momnet, most weeks my DVR catches practice and qualifying before I even realize it.

News flash* - Bob Varsha will be in the broadcast booth more Malaysia. Not sure how that worked out, but glad it did. Diffey will be covering indycar.

Never pick Grosjean and Maldonado in the same race. I thought I consciously avoided that but changed some picks around when Vettel had that P3 problem. Le sigh..

@owace: the extra commercial didn't bother me nearly as much as having to listen to Diffey's over-hyped deliver instead of Varsha's true enthusiasm.
I'm really going to miss Bob Varsha. :( The rest of NBC's broadcast is decent, but nothing better than Speed's broadcasts. Oh, and it's funny to see NBC screw things up, like seeing the same driver listed twice in the Q1 standings, or "Romain Gorsjean" getting 10th in a "Ferrari" according to their results graphic. lol

That may be the first time I've seen a round 1 with nobody tying. Even the folks with the same points earned them with different picks.
And that was an entertaining 1st race... I thought Massa could have made the podium, but Kimi's 2-stop strategy kinda surprised everyone.

Raikkonen shows the world that his "shut up and let me drive" technique has merit by winning Round 1 in Australia.
Reno Stack, FF1 rookie this season, is only 2 points shy of a perfect Round 1, scoring 78 points. sperry, is also nearly perfect aside from picking Hulkenberg who failed to start the race with fuel tank issues after qualifying, takes 2nd with 70 points. Rounding out the fantasy podium is another rookie, dtbrunner, who scores 68 points putting him just ahead of soldmyboxter, RapidfireAZ, and Van who score 67, 66, and 66 points respectively to close out a tight top 6.
An exciting Round 1 is in the books, with a surprise winner. We go immediately to Malaysia for Round 2 next weekend. Can McLaren find some pace without Hamilton behind the wheel? Can Massa beat his teammate Alonso now that Ferrari appear to have a top-notch car? When will Red Bull strike back? Get your picks in shortly, Round 2 is just 5 days away!

I liked the side by side too. What I didn't like was that those breaks were an extra commercial break that didnt exist previously.

Welcome to the 2013 SECCS Fantasy Formula 1 Season! This is the 8th year now we're running this league, and it looks to be an exciting season. Many new drivers have joined the grid this season. And some of the veterans have left or changed teams, which will certainly shake up the picks this season.
Please sign up on the registration page if you'd like to compete!
