United States 16-18 Nov 2012Formula 1 Grand Prix of the United States Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas, USA Race Distance: 56 laps, 308.896 km Formula 1 returns to the United States for the season's penultimate round at the brand new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The brand new circuit features a blend of very long straights, large elevation changes, and a very tight infield section to really challenge the drivers and engineers alike. Red Bull once again shows its superior pace as Vettel takes yet another pole. Teammate Webber nabs 3rd on the grid, as Hamilton slots in between the two in 2nd. Grosjean and Raikkonen set the 4th and 5th fastest times, but Grosjean will take a 5 spot penalty for a gearbox change. Massa out qualifies Alonso in 7th over Alonso's dismal 9th place, but Ferrari intentionally opened Massa's gearbox to force a 5 spot penalty moving Alonso up an onto the clean side of the grid. The top 10 in the United States: VET HAM WEB GRO* RAI MSC MAS* HUL ALO MAL SEN BUT * 5 spot gearbox penalty With the championship in reach, Vettel ran away from the field from pole, but Alonso starting 7th jumped straight to 4th in turn one. Alonso inherited 3rd place when Webber's car had yet another alternator/KERS failure, and Vettel drops to 2nd as Hamilton chases him down and passes him in the DRS zone for the lead. Surprisingly this is the first time ever that Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso have shared the podium. Red Bull locks up the manufactureres championship, and Vettel nets just 3 points over Alonso, setting the driver's championship lead at 13 going into the final race in Brazil.
