 Bahrain 20-22 Apr 2012Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, Bahrain Race Distance: 57 laps, 308.405 km Bahrain International Circuit is a wonderful, yet somewhat sterile track designed by Hermann Tilke, the premier F1 course designer. Located in the sands of Bahrain's desert, special sprayed on adhesive along the track's race surface helps to keep the dust down. The track layout is a familiar blend of long straights and complex slow corners. Watch for passing in turns 1 and 4. Last year's race was cancelled due to political unrest in the region. In 2010, Alonso debuted for Ferrari with a win when pole-sitter Vettel fell back due to an engine issue. Massa drove the other Ferrari to 2nd, Hamilton rounded out the podium. Red Bull is back in top form as Vettel takes his first pole of the season, with teammate Webber in 3rd. Hamilton starts 2nd in between the two Red Bull cars. Button and Rosberg round out the top 5. While Schumacher fails to make it out of Q1 due to poor strategy. Vettel used his pole position to jump out to a lead an control the race where tire wear was the primary factor for most teams. Lotus drivers Raikkonen and Grosjean make the best use of their fantastic top speed to work through the field. Raikkonen even legitimately threatened Vettel for the lead as the Red Bull slowed on worn tires, but ultimately the Lotus pair had to settle for 2nd and 3rd. Webber takes 4th and Rosberg 5th. di Resta turns his best qualifying position of the season into 6th place, while positions 8 through 10 are full of big-name drivers who simply had bad days with the tire wear and pit stops: Alonso, Hamilton, Massa, Schumacher, though Schumacher did drive from 23rd to score a point in 10th.
