Malaysia 23-25 Mar 2012Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Race Distance: 56 laps, 310.408 km The Malaysian Grand Prix is held at the spectacular Sepang International Circuit. The first of designer Hermann Tilke's F1 tracks, this course has set the standard for new era F1 venues. With two massive straightaways leading to the very difficult downhill decreasing radius double apex turn 1, there tends to seem like there's more passing opportunity than there actually is. Many passes on the straights tend to be given back in the T1-T2 complex. Last season Vettel won in dominating fashion, Button took second with good tire management, and Heidfeld put a Lotus/Renault on the podium in 3rd for the 2nd race in a row. McLaren is on top again in qualifying, locking out the front row, Hamilton ahead of Button. Schumacher takes his best qualifying position since his return from retirement, starting 3rd. Webber bests Raikkonen for 4th over 5th, while last season's pole-meister qualifies only 6th. The top 10 in Malaysia: HAM BUT MSC WEB RAI* VET GRO ROS ALO PER *will start +5 positions due to gearbox change The skies above Kuala Lumpur opened only 9 laps into the race, resulting in an hour red flag delay. But when the race resumed and track slowly dried out, it was Alonso's Ferrari that led the field to the checkered flag, to most people's surprise. Taking a legitimate swipe at the lead is Mexican rookie Perez who lands his Sauber in an amazing 2nd position. Hamilton once again settles for 3rd place after starting from pole. Webber and Raikkonen round out the top 5. Both Vettel and Button finish out of the points.
