Singapore 21-23 Sep 2012Singtel Sinapore Grand Prix Singapore Street Circuit, Marina Bay, Singapore Race Distance: 61 laps, 309.316 km The street course in Marina Bay, Singapore is the only true Formula 1 night race. As a street circuit created from the city surface streets along the local harbor, the Singapore circuit is similar to Valencia. The course has a complicated 23 turns, and it run at night under a massive array of artificial lights in order to put the live television broadcast into prime-time for European fans. Last season, Vettel is dominant again with the pole and an easy win. Button pushes hard to pass Webber for 2nd place, leaving Webber last on the podium. While Vettel and Red Bull appeared to dominate practice all weekend long, it's Hamilton that grabs the pole with a half-second in hand over the field. Maldonado surprises many as well by setting the 2nd fastest time in Q3, relegating Vettel to 3rd place on the grid. Championship leader Alonso qualifies only 5th fastest. The top 10 in Singapore: HAM MAL VET BUT ALO DIR WEB GRO MSC It was Hamilton's race from the start, but a rare mechanical failure (gearbox) end's his race well before half the distance was completed. 2nd best qualifier, Maldonado, also had a disappointing race as he lost his position in the first turn to Vettel, then during one of the 2 safety car periods was forced to park it with a hydraulics issue. With the faster qualifiers out of the race, Vettel put his amazing pace to task and became a 2-time winner in Singapore. Button and Alonso round out the podium, while Massa comes back from an early puncture to run from last to 8th in what may be one of his best career drives.
