The season is complete! Congratulations to Motoring, our 2011 Fantasy F1 Champion!
Motoring's season began slowly without winning a race until Spain (Round 5), where she finally took the victory with a perfect set of picks. From there she had a roller-coaster ride for the next 5 rounds, going between wins and 9th or worse finishes. But by Germany (Round 10), Motoring began her march to the top with all podium finishes through Round 17, including 5 of her 7 event wins. She finally took the overall lead in Abu Dhabi, the second to last event, and held it through Brazil to win the overall championship. Motoring finishes the season as the only participant to break 1000 points, scoring a massive 1002 points.
Motoring has competed in the Fantasy F1 championship since the first season, and has finished in 2nd place overall in 2010 and 2007, and 7th in 2009 and 2008, and 5th in 2006. This is her 1st overall win, and is perhaps some vindication after coming close twice before. Congrats again to Motoring!
Placing 2nd overall this season is owace. owace started off with a bang, scoring more than 70 points in 10 of the 1st 11 rounds, including 2 perfect 80 point rounds. owace lead the championship for all but 4 rounds of the season; twice he temporarily lost the least to Rod R early in the season. But by Singapore (Round 14), owace's big spending early caught up to him and a lack of available driver picks allowed the competition to catch up. His early strategy, and careful use of mid-pack drivers late in the season, did in fact beat everyone but one, netting 985 points, and earning him 2nd place cash in his first ever Fantasy F1 season.
Placing 3rd this year is sperry. Like Motoring, sperry played the slow and steady strategy, but his picks just weren't quite as good as Motoring's. With only a single round win in Brazil, and the inability to use his drop strategically after an 8 point result in Canada (Round 7), sperry couldn't catch owace's huge early points, or Motoring's uncanny ability to avoid wasting big name drivers on DNFs. But sperry was able to gather 975 points and pick the most race winners (14 times) on his way to 3rd overall.
Other notable performances this season came from Matt and curley who both broke the 900 point barrier allowing them to finish 4th and 5th respectively. In the 6th through 8th overall positions are Rod R, Tahoe RX7, and Double Phister who were all round winners this year, but simply ran out of driver picks late in the season.
Based on the payout schedule of 50%/30%/20% and 14 participants, Motoring wins $140, owace wins $84, and sperry wins $56. The awards will be sent out shortly to the PayPal addresses used during registration.
Thanks to everyone for a fantastic fantasy season. The silly season begins now, and next year will be here before you know it! Please come back and play again in 2012!

Im still baffled behind motoring's pick strategy and how it's worked out so well for her. Given the pick situation I really don't have much of a chance of regaining 1st place.

Wow, what a race... Vettel's puncture may have just opened the door for owace, because Motoring would have sealed the deal for 1st had Vettel won.

With an un-heard-of DNF by Vettel, Hamilton takes the win at the fantasy track of Yas Marina.
curley and Tahoe RX7 take top honors this round with 51 points. curley vaults up 4 spots overall to 4th, while Tahoe RX7 gains one spot to 6th.
Matt is 3rd best with 40 points and moves to 4th overall. lisaab (4th) and sperry (5th) both score 36 points, and both hold their overall positions.
Motoring brings in only 28 points this round, but it's enough of a delta over owace's 20 points to take the overall lead for the 1st time this season! Just 2 points separate the top 2 now, with one round remaining. Motoring seemed to have the picks advantage, but Interlagos will be a nail-biter for the top spot.
sperry is currently in the final payout position, 51 points out of 2nd, but has both Matt and Rod R within striking distance behind him in 4th and 5th.
We go to the final round in Brazil! In just 2 weeks, we'll have our fantasy champion. Make those last tweaks to your picks, and good luck!

Yeah, it seems like Tilke isn't creating the same old boring circuits. Certainly the basic layout is very "standard", but the elevation adds a lot to it.

Red Bull wins again in the land of the sacred cow as Vettel dominates the first ever GP of India.
lisaab makes the most of the round with 63 points that bump her up 2 spots overall into 9th. Motoring continues her run of great late rounds with 57 points, helping her to consolidate 2nd overall. sperry takes 3rd and moves up 2 spots overall to the 3rd paying position. Rounding out the top 5 is Tahoe RX7 who climbs 3 spots, and curley who drops two.
At the top, owace keeps his lead but loses ground to Motoring who is just 6 points back. With just two rounds remaining in the season, and nearly everyone out of driver picks, it's going to be a tight finish with the top 6 all within reach of the podium!
In 2 weeks, we race from day into night in Abu Dhabi at the magnificent Yas Marina circuit. We're down to the end-game picks, get them in!

Yeah, I don't see any way Alonso and Hamilton could team up again, I was thinking Hamilton to Red Bull Opposite Vettel, but Webber just re-upped his contract too. Hamilton is clearly not happy at McLaren for whatever reason.

Lisa and I were just noting how smug and unhappy Lewis has been. Didn't Button re-sign with McLaren already... but Hamilton hasn't? If his least favorite teammate wasn't already at Ferrari, I'd be guessing Hamilton was holding out for Massa's seat.

Vettel gets his 10th win this season. With 3 rounds remaining, he has a chance to tie the all-time record of 13 set by his hero, Schumacher.
Taking yet another round win is Motoring. 70 points moves her into 2nd overall. curley and Lisaab share 2nd, both scoring 59 points, with curley moving up one spot into 9th. sperry takes 4th with 56 points and vaults up 3 spots to 4th overall. Matt rounds out the top 5 in Korea, holding station in 5th overall.
With just 3 round remain, Motoring lies just 43 points behind fantasy championship leader owace. Can she make up the gap with her last few picks, or can owace hang on to the lead he's held for most of the season!? It's coming down to the wire now as F1 is off to New Delhi for the 1st ever GP of India in just 2 weeks!

Vettel becomes the youngest double world champion by finishing 3rd in Japan!
Motoring takes another round victory with an aggressive decision to forgo picking Vettel as he scores his second lowest round of the season. Motoring's 73 points this round bump her up 2 to 3rd overall with many good picks still in reserve. curley takes 2nd this round with 66 points and hold station in 7th. sperry's 61 points are good enough for 3rd today and move him to 7th. lisaab and Matt round out the top 5, with Matt's points good enough to move up a whopping 4 places into 4th overall, just 31 points out of the money paying positions.
owace and Rod R hold on to their top overall spots, though the gap tightens. Double Phister drops 2 to 5th.
Four rounds remain, two of which are wild card's as Korea has never been run in the dry, and India is a new track. Will Vettel cruise now that he's the champ, and give the other teams a chance at the top step? Get your picks in, Korea is next weekend!

Vettel takes yet another win on his march to a 2nd world championship. Only Button can stop him now, and all Vettel needs is a single point in the next 5 races to clinch.
Grabbing this weeks top spot, and moving up 3 positions overall to 5th for her effort, is motoring with 59 points. lisaab also has a great round, scoring 58 points for 2nd. Tahoe RX7 moves up one spot to 6th with 53 points and 3rd this round. sperry and curley round out the top 5 in Singapore with 53 and 43 points respectively.
Again the fantasy championship race tightens as the early big spenders at the top of the standings finish at the bottom of the round. owace and Rod R tie for 9th, Double Phister finishes in 11th. Will they have enough points to hold on to the money positions over the next 5 rounds? The season continues to wrap up in 2 weeks from Japan at the drivers' favorite: Suzuka.

Fully 1/3rd of the field fails to finish in Monza as the Italian GP's high speeds and tight chicanes take their toll on the competitors.
Tahoe RX7 is nearly perfect with 78 points this round, moving him up one spot to 7th overall. Matt takes 2nd this round at 76 points. Motoring scored 70, but loses one spot in the standings. lisaab and Nick round out the top 5 by tying for 4th with 66 points.
At the bottom of the round are the top 4 in the standings, which means the fantasy championship is starting to tighten up as we come down to the end of the season and available picks are scarce.
The European heart of the season is now over, and only fly-away races remain. We're off to Singapore next for F1's only true night race! Get your picks in, round 14 is in just 2 weeks!

Red Bull is back in dominating form after the summer break with a 1-2 win in Spa.
Chris and curley tie for the top position this round with 62 points. Both move up one spot overall for their effort into 4th and 10th places respectively. Motoring is 3rd this week, with 59 points putting her up one spot into 7th overall.
sperry and owace round out the top 5 by scoring 58 and 57 points each. owace's 5th place nets enough points to pass Rod R for the overall lead.
We go from one historic circuit to another. In two weeks time, the F1 circus arrives in Monza for the Italian GP. Can Ferrari use their home track to catch the resurging Red Bull team?

For the first time in ages, F1 seems to have stumbled upon incredible parity, as the season heads into the summer break. Red Bull has been caught up by McLaren and Ferrari, and at the Hungaroring, it seemed like any one of those 6 drivers could have won the race.
Capitalizing on the rain induced shenanigans is motoring who pulls down a perfect 80 points. Matt, nick, and owace tie for 2nd with a solid 70 point round each. Nick moves up to 5th, and owace is back in the lead after the drop factor moved him to 2nd. Carpenterbob rounds out the top 5 with 63 points, moving him up 2 places to 10th overall.
F1 takes its summer break now for a few weeks. But when we return, we return to Spa one of the most spectacular circuits in all of motorsports. Don't forget to make your picks over the break!

After losing to Ferrari in Britain, Red Bull looked to Germany to jump back up front. But with poor qualifying from Vettel and surprising pace from McLaren, for the second race in a row, Red Bull fails to find victory.
Capitalizing on Hamilton's win are Carpenterbob, Motoring, and owace who all make 80-point perfect picks. Also in a 3-way tie for 4th, Chris, Double Phister, and Rod R score 70 points each.
Due to the drop being factored into the results for the 1st time this season, the standings have become quite jumbled. owace continues to maintain the championship lead, with a 20 point gap over Double Phister who moves up to 2nd over Rod R due to the drop.
The next race is in Hungary, and there's no weekend off! Get your picks in soon, the European swing of the championship continues this weekend!

by

at 9:28 pm, Jul 12
Ferrari's pace finally appears to match that of Red Bull, so all it took was an extra few moments in the pits for Vettel to lose his lead and put Alonso on top of the podium.
Grabbing another perfect round is owace who scores 80 points, and moves back into the overall lead with Rod R dropping to 2nd, only 9 points back. 2nd place is shared by Chris, Double Phister, Rod R and Tahoe RX7 who all score 70 points, missing out on perfect rounds due to Button's loose wheel-nut.
We're deep into the season now. Round 10 is the half-way point, and will be the point where the drop is applied in the scoring. Just for clarification: the drop this season will be applied to the lowest scoring round throughout the whole season. But once we're past half-way, the drop will start showing up in the results. So, if you've had all good rounds up to this point, you will still likely take your drop near the end of the season as your picks run out.
We move on to the historic Nurburgring for this season's German GP. Get your picks in, the race is just 2 weekends away!

by
owace
at 10:27 am, Jul 12
does the 1 drop also drop our picks, meaning that those drivers picked dont count towards the 10 limit?
by
owace
at 8:10 am, Jul 11
Not sure, the way I saw it, is that they are worried about Ferrari's resurgence and want to pad Vettel's lead as much as possible. 3 points "can" break a championship. Ignoring that aspect I dont think Vettel would have allowed Webber an easy pass and I was concerned about damage to either one of them.
by
Matt
at 10:31 pm, Jul 10
Christian Horner had no issue bashing the other teams for using orders last season, then today clearly makes that call. It actually would have made more sense to allow Webber more points to ensure he keeps pace ahead of Alonso. I have no problem with team orders, but it is an issue when RedBull was so clearly against it in the past. My sucky picks lived up to my expectations...haha.

It was a rather boring race in Valencia when compared to the last few rounds.
Taking advantage of the predictable results are 7 people with more than 60 points this round. Leading the way in a 3-way tie are Double Phister, Nick, and Tahoe RX7 who all score a nearly perfect 78 points, missing out on 2 points by picking Button over Massa.
Rod R and owace continue their battle at the top of the standings, this time trading the lead as Rod R scores 4th place this round with 76 points, and owace in 5th with 73 points. That's right folks, it's just a 1 point difference between the top two overall!
Matt makes a good showing in 6th with 66 points, and sperry redeems himself a bit in 7th with 61 points, good enough to move up 4 positions overall.
Hurt hardest in Valencia is Carpenterbob who scores only 10 points with his ballsy move to pick long-shot drivers that didn't work out, and Chris who fails to make picks this round. Luckily, there will be a dropped round this season, so don't fret over one bad round!
The European swing continues in full effect with the return to Britain in just two weeks! Will DRS turn Silverstone into a passing Mecca? Get your pick in for the GP of Great Britain!

Yeah Scott, on the MSC pick, I had a hunch that they were going to try and bank on the wet, and would likely set Michael up that way...Plus, he's a great wet driver and is due for some action...I still think Motoring pulling 60 points without using ALO, HAM or VET is incredible.

Well Button certainly had to haul ass after the SC he caused when he beached ALO, since he was dead last and had a long way to go to catch up. I know he was at the limit when he drove past me in T1/T2 under caution. But I haven't seen the race on tv yet, so I can't really honestly comment on how "racing" those incidents actually were.
edited by
sperry

In a wet race of epic proportions, it was a single mistake by reigning champ Vettel that gives the win to Button.
Taking the top slot this round in the fantasy season is motoring who pulls in 60 points, good enough to move up 1 position into 10th overall. 5 others tie for 2nd with identical picks of all the top drivers, good today for 58 points. Nick and Tahoe RX7 are both able to gain a spot amongst those tied.
Making a dismal showing is sperry who garners just 8 points from a lonely Massa pick, dropping him 3 spots overall. So much for the "advantage" of actually going to the race.
F1 returns to Europe for the (hopefully) sunny skies of Valencia. The GP of Europe is in 2 weeks!
by
owace
at 8:17 pm, Jun 12
I personally thought the only thing button was really guilty of during the race was speeding during the SC. The contact during the race was i) something he had no idea about, ii) a racing incident. see the nasioc thread for more details. Sucks that Rosberg went from 7th to 11th in the last lap.

sperry
at 4:03 pm, Jun 12
Great MSC pick Matt. That's 12 points over everyone else! Did you pick him thinking about a wet race? It really looked like Mercedes planned for the rain, 'cause as it dried out, Michael was noticeably slower on the straights.

at 3:55 pm, Jun 12
Nothing like sitting in the rain for 5 hours to watch the guy I didn't pick crash out the two guys I did pick, then go on to win the race. Button deserves 40 seconds added to his time if the stewards are planning on being consistent.

Vettel continues the defense of his world championship with another victory, this time in one of the greatest F1 races in history: a race littered with contact, varied tire strategies, and an all-out battle for the last quarter of the race by three former world champs for the lead.
In a 3-way tie for the round, Chris, Double Phister, and owace make the picks that take the most points in Monaco. Scoring a near-perfect 78 points, Chris is able to move up one spot to 4th overall, while owace is able to re-take the lead lost to Rod R last round in Spain.
4th place this round is also a 3-way tie, between Matt, Rod R, and Tahoe RX7. Good for 66 points, but Matt and Rod R both lose one spot overall while Tahoe RX7 picks up two to slide into 8th overall.
It's still only a 9 point difference at the top as the F1 teams pack up for the only race in North America this season: Montreal. Get your picks in for one of the fastest tracks on the calendar... this time with two DRS zones per lap! The GP of Canada is in just two weeks!

Vettel overcomes a faulty KERS to fight off Hamilton for the win in Catalunya.
Making the big points this round are no less than 5 people with perfect picks. The entire top 5 of Chris, curley, Double Phister, Motoring, and Tahoe RX7 selected ALO BUT HAM VET WEB, thus scoring the maximum 80 points for this round. Chris, motoring and Tahoe RX7 all gained 2 positions overall with their perfect picks.
In the fantasy championship standings, it's a 76 point 6th place round for Rod R that moves him into the overall lead over owace who scores 71 points. There are only 3 points separating the top two! Double Phister and Matt remain in 3rd and 4th overall. Chris rounds out the overall top 5.
There's no rest for the weary this week, as 1st practice in Monaco is this Thursday! The "crown jewel" of the Formula 1 season, the GP of Monaco is this weekend! Will Red Bull be able to keep their aero advantage without the long fast turns that their car excels at? Will Ferrari's pace improve enough to put Alonso on the podium? Get your picks in ASAP!

i would much rather see tire related passes vs. DRS. Sure DRS is working but I think it's rather gimmicky and gives entirely way too much of an advantage to the following driver.

In what may be the final race in Istanbul Park, Vettel and Webber exorcise the demons from last years teammate crash by taking 1-2.
In the fantasy championship, Double Phister grabs 1st this round with a nearly perfect 78 points, that's only good enough for him to maintain 3rd overall as owace and Rod R tie for 2nd this round to maintain their 1st and 2nd place overall positions as well.
Tahoe RX7 and Matt round out top 5 in Turkey. van and Motoring both tumble down the standings after missing the picks deadline, but remember with this season's drop, don't count them out!
The GP of Spain is up next in 2 weeks time. Red Bull seems to be dominant, but McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari all seem locked into a massive battle for 2nd best while being poised to take advantage of any Red Bull mistake.

Best placed DRS zone yet! Turkey remains one of my favorite circuits, I hope Bernie doesn't pull it from the schedule

Not just the last 5 laps... that was one of the best full races I've seen in ages!

It was a very entertaining race in China, as Red Bull's dominance is broken, if only a by a bit.
Winning his second round of the season, this time with a season high 78 points, Rod R closes the overall gap to the leader, owace, who takes 4th this round with 73 points.
Double Phister scores 76 points, good enough for 2nd in China as well as bumping him up 3 positions to 3rd overall. Also on the move, van's 74 point 3rd place finish this round is good for 6 positions, slotting him into 7th in the championship. Rounding out the top 5 is S.Monkey with 68 points.
After the back-to-back races in Malaysia and China, the teams head back to their European home bases for 3 weeks before heading out to the first drive-away race. The GP of Turkey is up in 3 weekends from now!

Rain threatened but failed to affect the race in Malaysia. Though the extreme tire wear meant pitstops a plenty for the field.
Making the best of the round, and moving into sole lead of the fantasy championship is owace who scores 74 points. Latecomer to the season van takes 2nd with 69 points. While Double Phister moves up 5 spots overall By scoring 67 points, tying for 3rd in the round the with Rod R and S.Monkey.
The race in Shanghai is just a week away. Can Red Bull fight off the increasing pace of McLaren without a reliable KERS system? Can Ferrari apply some of their race pace to qualifying? Will Lotus Renault keep up their surprising podium finishes? China is next!

Webber may look slow compared to Vettel, but compared to the rest of the field he's still flying.
Massa has been getting tromped by Alonso since Ferrari made him give up the win last season in Germany... I thought he was going to turn it around at the start of this race, but Alonso still got him. :(
And what's Heidfeld supposed to do when Petrov shows up this season twice as good as he was last year? lol

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a common similarity on many of the teams, one car/driver extremely fast and consistent, the other car/driver a major question mark? Look at Massa, Webber, Heidfeld. Sure looks bad when your teammate whips you that badly... on to Malaysia

Man, I had a feeling a Renault was going to be surprisingly quick. I just picked the wrong one.

The first race of the season is complete! The nasty weather stayed away, resulting in a quick race on a beautiful summer day in Australia.
Jumping right to top of the standings, owace and Rod R tie for the round with identical picks earning 73 points. Carpenterbob and Matt take 3rd and 4th on the great performance of Petrov, grabbing 62 and 58 points respectively. Last season's champ curley rounds out the fantasy top 5 with 47 points.
The humid and stormy weather of Malaysia is up next, in two weeks time. Can McLaren and Ferrari develop their cars quick enough to make up the difference to Red Bull? Will the HRT guys win their uphill battle to make the grid without the convenience of testing? Get your picks in for Kuala Lumpur!

Wow, based on qualifying, nice work by CarpenterBob and Matt for making some great picks without using all the big names!
Petrov looks surprisingly quick. Poor Kubica must be pissed he's not on the grid. :(

Due to the ongoing political unrest in Bahrain, round 1 of the 2011 championship has been indefinitely postponed.
The site has been upgraded to support canceling a round. Picks made towards the canceled round will not count against your season pick count, nor will the round act as a drop.
Be advised, this new canceled round feature is not exactly well tested, please let me know if anyone sees anything that appears incorrect on the site!

Welcome to the 2011 Fantasy Formula 1 Season!
This is our 6th year running, and we're looking forward to an exciting new season. The cars have changed with the return of KERS, movable rear wing elements, and some interesting blown exhaust innovations. The teams have also changed with Renault becoming a second Lotus team in the pit lane. And there are a bunch of new young drivers joining the grid.
This year there is also a minor change to the fantasy rules. We will be running 1 drop this season. This means the single lowest scoring round for each participant will be dropped. This will help those folks that accidentally forget to make picks for a round. But keep in mind, a dropped round still counts against your pick counts for the season! See the FAQ page for more info.
Once again, welcome to the 2011 season! Registration is open!
