Round 1 Details:

Australia - 29 Mar 2009
ING Australian Grand Prix
Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia
Event Description:
58 laps, 307.574 km (191.12 mi)

The season opener for 2009 is once again on the "streets" of the Albert Park Circuit. Most of the year, this course is a park road, but for the GP weekend, it's converted into a colorful 3.3 mile circuit.

The last three Australian GPs have been won by the driver that went on to win the championship, including last season with Lewis Hamilton's pole and win. The 2008 race was plagued by wrecks, blown motors, and safety cars. With all the new rule changes, and wider front wings, will we see lots of contact and attrition again this season?
Qualifying Summary:
The first qualifying session of the season has demonstrated that the new rules have indeed shaken up the normal rank and file of F1.

Showing the advantage of Honda's long development program, Brawn GP inherits a fantastic car enabling Button and Barrichello to take the front row of the grid. Vettel brings his RedBull into third, sharing the second row with Kubica's BMW.

Glaringly missing from the top 10 are both of the McLaren entries.

The top 8 starters for Australia:

BUT BAR VET KUB ROS GLO* MAS TRU* RAI WEB

*Due to post qually inspection violations, both Toyota's have been moved to the back of the grid.

Race Summary:
It was all Brawn for the opening weekend of 2009. Showing well in practice, Ross Brawn's outfit purchased from Honda just weeks before the season began place drivers Button and Barrichello at the front in qualifying, and again at the end of the race.

Trulli overcomes starting from pit lane for the third spot on the podium*. Hamilton fights his way from way back to fourth**. Glock, Alonso, and Rosberg take 5th through 7th. And in his F1 debut, Buemi scores a single point in 8th.

Top runners Vettel and Kubica end up heartbroken when a late race accident takes them both out.

*Trulli gets a 25 second penalty for passing under the Safety Car and is reclassified in 12th after the race. Trulli's 25 second penalty was later repealed after it was found Hamilton was told to let Trulli pass

**FIA concluded that Hamilton was told to let to let Trulli pass. Trulli's 25 second penalty is removed, and Hamilton is excluded from the results for providing "misleading information"
