53 laps, 190.58 mi / 306.720 km
Monza is one of the quintessential F1 tracks. Built in 1922 it featured an incredible oval and a high-speed road course. Today the oval is unused, and the road course has been drastically slowed with chicanes for safety, but remains the fastest track on the Formula 1 schedule.
Last season's race was a one-two by McLaren lead by Alonso at Ferrari's home circuit. Raikkonen took third, with Massa retiring on lap 10. Heidfeld and Kubica were fourth and fifth in their BMWs. |
| Qualifying Summary: |
Rain acts as the great equalizer, catching out Hamilton and Raikkonen in Q2, leaving them starting deep in the field when they decided to delay taking to the track that steadily got slower throughout the session.
Making the best out of the slippy conditions, Sebastian Vettel takes his first career pole for Toro Rosso. Kovalainen is second fastest, Webber third. Massa doesn't do much to dispel the rumor that he's slow in the wet by qualifying in sixth.

| Race Summary: |
The rain failed to depart after qualifying, and left the start of the race under soaking conditions. Vettel took the green flags from behind the Safety Car, and used the rolling start to his advantage, driving away from the pack as the only car with a clear view ahead.
It was wire-to-wire for the young German who scored his first ever victory, and became the youngest driver ever to win an F1 race. He also scored the first victory for Toro Rosso, the current incarnation of the Minardi team started in 1985.
Chasing Vettel was Kovalainen, who started and finishes second. Behind him was Kubica who put in a flawless one-stop drive to come from a mid-pack start to a podium finish. Massa finishes a disappointing sixth as Hamilton comes from 15th on the grid to 7th to limit damage to his championship to only 1 point. Raikkonen recovered from his terrible qualifying position only to set fast lap of the race, but scores no points from 9th. |
