Round 12 Results:
Europe - 24 August 2008
Grand Prix of Europe
Circuit de Valencia, Valencia, Spain
Event Description:
57 laps, 192.660 mi / 310.080 km

This year the European GP will be held at the brand new Valencia Street Circuit in the port city of Valencia, Spain.

The course is much wider than the Monaco street circuit and has more run-off areas, but also features Monaco-like walls right on the edge of the track. There is a very "Long Beach" esque feel to the track, for those familiar with the Long Beach GP run by CART in the past. The track features 25 corners and expected F1 top speeds are at just over 200 mph.

The 2008 EuGP is a total wild-card race this season, with no previous event held at a similar track in recent years.
Qualifying Summary:
Rain threatened, but failed to affect the results of qualifying. Massa puts his Ferrari on pole, 2 tenths ahead of Hamilton's McLaren. Kubica shows that BMW still has decent qualifying pace with a third place start.

Surprises in this round include a great P6 start by Vettel, as well as a pile of experienced drivers out in Q1 including Button, Coulthard, Fisichella, and Barrichello.

Race Summary:
The race was little more than a Massa led parade, resulting in the Ferrari pilot grabbing the trifecta of pole, fast lap, and race win. Hamilton made one threat at passing Massa during the first round of pitstops, but was unable to pull it off, finishing second. Kubica shows his talent and the BMW's competitiveness at the high speed tracks by taking third, his first podium since his victory in Canada.

Raikkonen had an eventful day, but in a bad way, as he ran well off the pace of his teammate, jumped the green light during his second pitstop (injuring his fuel man), and blew up his Ferrari powerplant. The only other retirees were Alonso who lost the rear wing in an opening lap incident with Nakajima, and Sutil who parked the car in a tire wall.
