Round 16 Results:
Japan - 12 October 2008
Fuji Television Japanese Grand Prix
Fuji Speedway, Oyama, Shizuoka, Japan
Event Description:
67 laps, 305.721 km (189.945 mi)

The Japanese GP is back at Fuji Speedway in Oyama for 2008, after which the GP will alternate between Suzuka and Fuji.

Fuji Speedway is the Toyota owned facility originally built in 1963 for NASCAR. However, the original owners ran out of money while the superspeedway was under construction, resulting in the original odd shaped road course. Today, with Toyota's investment in the facility, it's a more traditional road course built to F1 standards, but still features the original long front straight.

Last season's race started behind the safety car due to heavy rain. Poor tire selection pushed the Ferraris to the back of the field at the start, and the crash of Alonso meant Hamilton was able to drive to victory without too much pressure. However, there was some drama behind the safety car, when 3rd place Vettel crashed into 2nd place Webber as Hamilton brake-checked in the rain.
Qualifying Summary:
In what will go down as either brilliant fuel strategy or terrible planning, both Ferrari drivers leave a lap on the table in Q3, resulting in what may be poor starting positions for the race. Massa especially will have a hard day at the office on Sunday with his 5th place starting position.

Sneaking into the second row is Alonso, while both Toyota's will start in 7th and 8th at their home track.

The starting eight for Fuji:

HAM RAI KOV ALO MAS KUB TRU GLO
Race Summary:
Hamilton relives last season by being overly aggressive when he didn't need to be, pushing wide in turn 1 and forcing much of lead group of cars off the track. A move that cost him not just the lead but also a drive-thru penalty.

Massa also put in a bit of an overly aggressive move when he attempted to pass back Hamilton in the chicane and ended up spinning the McLaren, also earning him a drive-thru.

Renault became the beneficiary of the Ferrari/McLaren bad luck giving the team the chance to fight for the win. Alonso puts in a great drive for the win, with his teammate Piquet taking fourth. Kubica turns around BMW's back luck by placing second, and Raikkonen salvages some good points for Ferrari in third.

Massa ends up working hard to fight back for a single point, which became two after Bourdais is docked 25 seconds for contact with Massa on the way out of the pits dropping him from 6th to 10th.
